Teaching
Educational session with Escuelitas’ adult learners, 2026.
Carrillo’s teaching spans Chicanx/Latinx Studies, urban studies, queer of color critique, performance studies, and affect theory. He has taught at UCLA, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Smith College, and Emory University, developing courses that connect critical scholarship with students’ lived experiences and contemporary social issues.
Outside of academia, Carrillo serves as a political educator with freedom school initiatives. He works closely with Escuelitas, an ethnic studies–based liberatory school in Atlanta, where he serves on the Curriculum & Programming Committee. He works closely with adult learners using ethnic studies frameworks to develop critical analytic, reading and writing skills. His work with youth includes the Youth Power Collective, a leadership development program for high school students. Through these collaborations, Carrillo brings his commitment to culturally responsive and community-based education into spaces beyond the university.
