Art Work
Carrillo is a practicing artist. At a young age of 12 he asked his parents for a sketch book and some pencils. It was then that he began to capture his surroundings: flowerpots, trees, and pop divas. In high school he took an elective arts class where he dived a bit deeper into his artistic practice.
Painting came a bit later during grad school when he took a Chicano studies art class with queer Chicana artist Alma Lopez who taught him the basics of painting and shading. Applying the basic skills of sketching he had strengthened as a young boy he realized painting was also a practice he could develop.
During the pandemic, he dedicated himself more fully to developing his painting practice. Since then, he has produced a growing body of work including paintings and digital images capturing queer LA nightlife, intimate moments of leisure, and portraits of close friends. His work has appeared in a range of places including Nuestra Creacion’s Ojala Exhibition (2024).
